Beat with salted herring


The dumpling with salted herring has a long family tradition. These meatballs were called Klops in northern and eastern Germany.


  • 500 g salted herrings
  • 750g mixed minced meat
  • Pepper salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 liters of water
  • Bay leaf, allspice
  • 50 g chopped herring
  • 1 egg


  1. Weigh salted herring fillets finely
  2. Reserve 50 g for the sauce
  3. Prepare a minced meat dough and mix in the salted herring
  4. form small dumplings (approx. 15-20 pieces)
  5. Bring water to the boil in a pot with bay leaves and allspice
  6. Bring the dumplings to the boil briefly
  7. then let it steep for about 20 minutes
  8. Add the remaining salted herring with a beaten egg


A soaked, well-pressed bun can be added to the dumpling mixture. The salted herring can be replaced with anchovies. You can add capers to the sauce. Serve with boiled salted potatoes
